Focus Day at The Lightbox
On 24 September we're holding a Focus Day at The Lightbox in Woking - the highly-acclaimed winner of this year's £100,000 Art Fund Prize.
Critical response to this new facility has been hugely positive: "novel, brave and full of delights"; "they have designed an ingenious jewel"; "everything, from the displays to the decor, is eye-catching". And once you've experienced it, we believe you'll more than agree.

What's a Focus Day?
The aim is to provide participants with a detailed, stimulating, practical overview of a single innovative institution. The emphasis will be on sharing experiences and insights which will help you achieve exceptional results in your own organisation.
The day's programme will bring together both Lightbox staff and key project consultants to focus on the elements which make The Lightbox such a hugely successful enterprise. We'll hear from Marilyn Scott, Director of The Lightbox and senior members of her team; Julia Barfield, of Marks Barfield Architects (who also created the London Eye) and Alistair McCaw of exhibition designers Real Studios, among others.
What Will Be Covered?
We'll be covering these key aspects of the project in practical, detailed sessions:
- building community engagement
- the building - its brief, budget, design and sustainability
- the exhibitions - budget, design, use and sustainability
- the fundraising programme - capital, revenue and sources
- outreach to schools, families and adults
- marketing - strategies, markets and PR campaigns
- retail planning and operation
The day will be divided into sessions which focus on distinct aspects of the project. Each will be informal in style, to encourage discussion and interaction. As well as presentations, most sessions will involve viewing and visiting aspects of The Lightbox in-depth at first-hand.
With a maximum of some 50 participants, you'll be able to pinpoint in advance any issues and topics you'd particularly like to have covered or discussed, so that the day's experience will meet your individual needs. Plus you'll have access to a dedicated networking website, allowing you to interact with other participants and speakers both before and after the event.
Who Should Attend?
Professionals in museums, galleries and heritage organisations with a management responsibility; those involved in the planning and design of new projects; and specialists in fundraising, education, community development, marketing, retail and commercial services.
This will be a unique, intensive and highly rewarding day. We anticipate a very high level of interest and early booking is strongly recommended!
